Introduction to Programme

The mobile telecom market has witnessed tremendous growth globally since its debut in the early 90's. However in the last couple of years the momentum has attained a different quality. From making voice mobile, we are moving to all aspects of our lives: mobile music, mobile TV, mobile email and mobile office, all allows us to liberate ourselves from a fixed location.

In April 1991, the first commercial GSM base station was deployed and since then thousand of innovative and experienced engineers have worked together to take from GSM to GPRS, EDGE , WCDMA and HSDPA; soft switching is replacing traditional switching concepts and IP telephony enables true technology and service convergence. In Nigeria, GSM mobile service was commissioned in 2001 when Econent Wireless Nigeria ( Celtel Nigeria) commissioned the first base station. Since then we now have 4 major GSM operations and some surviving PTOs like Visafone and Starcomms, that account for a little less than 70 million subscribers. The numbers are still counting and is expected to grow to up 90 million subscribers in the next two years. The service evolution has also moved from GSM to GPRS and EDGE, 3G while 4G/LTE commercial launch is still sparingly operational. On the other hand, the operators and the equipment vendor suppliers are expected to roll out enough capacity in terms of systems and the personnels that would manage them. Also noted from the industry practitioner perspective is that there are shortage of skilled personnels in this niche market and this accounts for why most of the High Level responsibilities are entrusted in the hands of expartriates, which are also in short supply. We understand the aggressive growth of the Nigeria telecom market and the need to build sufficient capacity to respond to the business demands of the market place. In positioning young Nigerian engineers and scientists for a competitive career in this niche market, we have put together relevant training programmes to be facilitated by industry practitioners and professionals.

Laplace Telecoms Academy is established to offer best in class Telecommunication training programmes in response to the identified gap in the industry. Because we are industry professional and professionals, we understand the nitty gritty of the technologies and how best to mix the class room learning with the field ( Parctical) learning, which is like a Structured Knowledge Transfer model. The Faculties for this training are drawn from the 4 major GSM operators ( Celtel, MTN, Etisalat, and Globacom), and 4 major equipment vendor suppliers ( Huawei, Ericsson, NSN and Alcatel), and from our pool of talented inhouse engineers numbering over 200.
